How this is calculated
- We work out your 2026 federal and Alberta income tax on your employment income, using the same formulas as our Alberta income tax calculator (CRA’s T4127).
- We work it out again with your RRSP contribution deducted from your taxable income. CPP and EI don’t change; they’re based on your pay, not your taxable income.
- Tax savings = tax without the RRSP − tax with it.
- Real cost = contribution − tax savings.
- New room = 18% of this year’s earned income, up to the 2027 limit of $35,390.
Working out the tax twice, instead of multiplying by one tax rate, matters when your contribution is large enough to drop you into a lower bracket: part of it then saves tax at the lower rate.
RRSP tax savings by income
Tax saved by a $5,000 contribution in Alberta, 2026:
| Employment income | Tax saved | Savings rate |
|---|---|---|
| $40,000 | $1,100.00 | 22% |
| $60,000 | $1,159.27 | 23.2% |
| $80,000 | $1,525.00 | 30.5% |
| $100,000 | $1,525.00 | 30.5% |
| $150,000 | $1,800.00 | 36% |
| $200,000 | $2,114.74 | 42.3% |
| $250,000 | $2,135.48 | 42.7% |
Worked example: $5,000 on a $60,000 salary
On $60,000, your taxable income is $59,435.00 after the CPP enhancement deduction. That’s $912.00 above the top of the first federal bracket ($58,523), so that slice is taxed federally at 20.5%.
| Income tax without the RRSP | $7,969.59 |
|---|---|
| Income tax with $5,000 deducted | $6,810.32 |
| Tax savings | $1,159.27 |
The first $912.00 of the deduction saves 28.5% (20.5% federal + 8% Alberta); the other $4,088.00 saves 22% (14% + 8%). Once each tax amount is rounded to the cent, that’s $1,159.27, or 23.2% of the contribution, so the $5,000 really costs you $3,840.73.
RRSP withdrawal tax calculator
Taking money out of an RRSP works in reverse: the withdrawal is added to your income for the year. Your bank holds back tax when you withdraw, but that’s a prepayment, not your final tax.
Held back by your bank
$2,000.00
20% of the whole withdrawal
| You receive | $8,000.00 |
|---|---|
| Tax the withdrawal actually adds | $3,014.70 |
| You’ll owe at tax time | $1,014.70 |
Calculated in your browser. Your numbers never leave your device.
With $60,000 of income, a $10,000 withdrawal has $2,000.00(20%) held back, but it adds $3,014.70 to your tax, because it pushes your income into higher brackets. You’d owe the other $1,014.70 when you file.
Smaller withdrawals lower the amount held back. Two $5,000 withdrawals have 10% held back ($1,000.00 in total) instead of $2,000.00. The tax you owe for the year doesn’t change, though; you just pay more of it when you file.
What this calculator assumes
- You live in Alberta and your income is employment income from one employer.
- If you enter your deduction limit, we only deduct up to it and warn you about over-contributions. If you leave it blank, we assume you have room for the whole contribution.
- You deduct the whole contribution this year. You can also carry it forward to deduct in a later year.
- It doesn’t include a workplace pension (which reduces your RRSP room), other deductions or credits, or the Home Buyers’ Plan and Lifelong Learning Plan.
Frequently asked questions
How much tax will I save with an RRSP contribution?
It depends on your income, because the deduction comes off your top tax bracket first. On a $60,000 salary in Alberta, a $5,000 contribution saves $1,159.27 (23.2%). On $100,000, a $10,000 contribution saves $3,050.00 (30.5%).
What is the RRSP limit for 2026?
Your 2026 RRSP deduction limit is 18% of your 2025 earned income, up to $33,810, plus any unused room from earlier years, minus pension adjustments if you have a workplace pension. Your exact limit is on your latest notice of assessment from the CRA. Your 2026 income will add new room for 2027, up to $35,390.
When is the RRSP deadline for the 2026 tax year?
Contributions made in 2026 or in the first 60 days of 2027 can be deducted on your 2026 return. The CRA confirms the exact date each year; for the 2025 tax year it was March 2, 2026.
Is an RRSP worth it if my income is low?
Usually not right away. At $15,000 of income you pay no income tax in Alberta, so a $2,000 deduction saves $0.00. You can contribute now and save the deduction for a later year when your income, and your tax rate, are higher, or use a TFSA instead.
What happens if I contribute too much to my RRSP?
The CRA lets you go up to $2,000 over your limit without a penalty. Anything above that is taxed at 1% a month until you withdraw it or new room covers it.
How much tax is taken off when I withdraw from an RRSP?
Your bank holds back one rate on the whole withdrawal, based on its size: 10% up to $5,000, 20% over $5,000 up to $15,000, and 30% over $15,000 (outside Quebec). So $10,000 has $2,000.00 held back. That's a prepayment, not your final tax: the whole withdrawal is added to your income, and you settle the difference when you file.
