How this is calculated
- Yearly salary = hourly wage × hours a week × paid weeks a year.
- Overtime = hourly wage × 1.5 × overtime hours a week × paid weeks, added to your salary. Alberta’s minimum overtime rate is 1.5 times your regular wage.
- Take-home pay comes from our Alberta income tax calculator: federal and Alberta income tax, CPP, CPP2 and EI on your total yearly pay, using CRA’s T4127 payroll formulas.
- Per period: monthly, twice-monthly and every-two-weeks amounts split the year into 12, 24 and 26 equal pays. Weekly and hourly amounts divide by the weeks and hours you actually work, overtime included.
Switching from salary to hourly works the same way in reverse: salary ÷ (hours a week × paid weeks). Hourly amounts are rounded to the cent.
Common Alberta hourly wages as a yearly salary

Worked example: $25 an hour with overtime
You earn $25 an hour, work 40 regular hours a week, and average 5 hours of overtime a week, paid all year.
| Regular pay: $25 × 40 × 52 | $52,000.00 |
|---|---|
| Overtime: $25 × 1.5 × 5 × 52 | $9,750.00 |
| Total yearly pay | $61,750.00 |
| Income tax, CPP, CPP2 and EI | −$12,910.43 |
| Take-home pay | $48,839.57 |
The overtime adds $9,750.00 before tax but $6,856.64 after tax, because those extra dollars are taxed at your marginal rate of 29.9%rather than your average rate. Spread over 45 hours a week, your take-home works out to $20.87 an hour.
What this calculator assumes
- All your pay is employment income from one Alberta employer, and you claim only the basic personal amounts.
- Overtime is paid at 1.5×, not banked as time off, and is the same every week.
- It doesn’t add shift premiums, tips, bonuses, general holiday pay or vacation pay on top. If you’re paid for vacation, use 52 weeks.
- It doesn’t include RRSP or pension contributions, union dues, benefits or other payroll deductions.
Frequently asked questions
How much is $25 an hour per year in Alberta after tax?
At $25 an hour, 40 hours a week for 52 weeks, you earn $52,000 a year before tax. After federal and Alberta income tax, CPP and EI, you take home about $41,982.93, which is $1,614.73 every two weeks or $20.18 for each hour worked.
How much is minimum wage per year in Alberta?
Alberta's general minimum wage is $15 an hour. Full time (40 hours a week, 52 weeks), that's $31,200 a year, or about $26,988.71 after tax and deductions. Students under 18 can be paid $13 an hour for their first 28 hours a week while school is in session.
How many working hours are in a year?
A full-time year of 40 hours a week for 52 weeks is 2,080 hours. At 37.5 hours a week it's 1,950 hours. If you take two weeks off unpaid, use 50 weeks in the calculator: that's 2,000 hours at 40 hours a week.
How is overtime paid in Alberta?
In Alberta, overtime is every hour over 8 in a day or 44 in a week, whichever adds up to more. Your employer must pay at least 1.5 times your regular wage for those hours. With a written overtime agreement, they can give you paid time off instead, at least one hour off for each overtime hour.
Should I use 52 weeks if I get vacation pay?
Yes, in most cases. Alberta requires vacation pay of at least 4% of your wages (6% after five years), which works out to about two (or three) weeks of pay. Whether it's paid during your time off or added to each cheque, you're paid for the full year, so 52 weeks gives the right yearly total.
What is $60,000 a year as an hourly wage?
$60,000 a year is $28.85 an hour if you work 40 hours a week for 52 weeks (2,080 hours). Type a salary into the calculator to convert it the other way, including after-tax hourly pay.
Why is my after-tax hourly wage so much lower than my pay rate?
Income tax, CPP and EI all come off before you're paid. At $25 an hour about 19.3% goes to deductions, so $25.00 becomes $20.18. Because tax rates rise with income, the gap grows as your wage goes up.
