Sources
We use official government sources first: the Canada Revenue Agency, Canada.ca, the Government of Alberta and federal regulators. If we can’t confirm a number from an official source, it doesn’t go on the site. Every calculator links to the sources it uses. Our methodology explains the details.
Update schedule
Rates change on a predictable calendar, and we update on the same one:
- November: the CRA publishes next year’s indexed tax brackets and credits. We prepare them.
- January 1: we switch to the new tax year, including new CPP and EI maximums.
- January and July: we check for mid-year changes to the CRA’s payroll formulas.
- Every quarter: Old Age Security amounts, which are indexed quarterly.
- Spring: Alberta municipal property tax rates, as councils publish them.
- As announced: federal budget changes, GST/HST rate changes and mortgage stress test rules.
Every calculator page shows the tax year its rates are for and the date it was last updated.
Corrections
If you think a result is wrong, please tell us. We check every report against the official source. When we find an error, we fix it as quickly as we can and update the page’s “last updated” date.
Independence
NorthCalc is paid for by advertising. Advertisers have no say in how calculators work or what pages say, and we don’t accept payment to recommend financial products.
